Dr Robert Thomas is a Senior Lecturer in the Healthcare Engineering research group at Loughborough University and also a registered pharmacist. After graduation he worked for Pfizer in pharmaceutics development before gaining a PhD from Nottingham University in the development of improved functionality tissue engineered liver models. This work highlighted the challenges of processing complex biological products and led to a post-doctoral post at Loughborough University addressing manufacturing issues for cell based products. Currently he is Associate Director of the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Regenerative medicine where he is focused on developing the process science and manufacturing capability for the production of cell based regenerative medicine therapies. His current research is in novel platforms and processes for scaled cell manufacture, haematopoietic stem cell expansion, and quality-by-design approaches to the manufacture of a variety of cell therapy products.
