Dr Rebecca Boston is a Lloyd’s Register Foundation and Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellow in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Sheffield. After completing a PhD in nanomaterials chemistry at the University of Bristol she joined Sheffield as a PDRA working on sustainable materials synthesis. Her current fellowship continues to develop these themes, finding sustainable synthetic processes for functional oxides including thermoelectrics, and battery and fusion materials. By taking inspiration from how biology controls crystallisation, it is possible to create nanostructured oxides with improved properties, and at lower temperatures than the current state-of-the-art. The long term aim is to take these processes, and the improvements to function which they enable, to large scale industrial production, improving the sustainability of the oxide device industry.
