Colm Connaughton is an applied mathematician with a joint appointment between the Warwick Mathematics Institute and the Warwick Centre for Complexity Science. He got his Ph.D. in applied mathematics from the University of Warwick in 2003. He subsequently held fixed term research fellowships at the Ecole Normale Superieur in Paris and at the Centre for Nonlinear Studies at Los Alamos National Laboratory in the United States before returning to Warwick as a faculty member in 2008 where he is now an Associate Professor (Reader).
His research interests are in the statistical dynamics of complex systems with particular emphasis on fluid dynamics and soft matter. He has published 34 articles in international peer-reviewed journals and authored or co-authored 3 book chapters. He is currently particularly interested in i droplet coagulation in turbulent clouds and the theory of rare events in complex systems. His recent
PhD students have worked on a range of different topics which include inverse problems in droplet coagulation, Rossby wave turbulence in the atmosphere and ocean, consensus formation in agent-based models of artificial societies, statistical learning algorithms for formulated consumer product design (in collaboration with Unilever UK) and stochastic simulation of microfluidic flows.
He has been the deputy director of the Mathematical Interdisciplinary Research at Warwick programme since 2010 which aims to develop and maintain links between Warwick mathematics and applied research in other quantitative disciplines. His main interest in manufacturing research is in making links between manufacturing challenges and the advanced mathematical and statistical modelling techniques which have been developed in the mathematical sciences. He is particularly interested in studying the collective behaviour of systems composed of large numbers of interacting units in which randomness and uncertainty play an essential role.
