His research is centred on the use of natural and sustainable materials and introducing them into a manufacturing environment with a particular emphasis on controlling the properties of materials on a molecular level in order to improve their functionality. This includes the development of recyclable and bio-based resins, the electrospinning of polymers into nanofibres (an inherently low energy process) and the manipulation and processing of industrial and agricultural wastes to produce high value products.
All of the research is underpinned by the three key aspects of sustainability (economic, social and environmental) and as such there is heavy focus on multidisciplinary research across engineering, physical and social sciences.
